Save the Whale in the Plastic Cup! Campaign in Cheonggyecheon for Earth Day
- Ahead of Earth Day, the “Goodbye Plastic Seoul” campaign will be held around Cheonggyecheon from Friday, the 19th. - Installations such as the “Whale Spewing Plastic” augmented reality (AR), fountains, and whale sculptures will be set to evoke empathy and encourage participation. - The city hopes that this campaign will increase the number of citizens participating in reducing plastic usage in their daily lives.A safe space for medical care that boosts resilience and recovery for all
It's been two years since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic and healthcare professionals have been battling the virus. As the pandemic prolonged, we have been practicing social distancing and self-quarantine in everyday life for the past two years. The unusual situations which people never experienced before became a new normal, and physical distancing and the Stay Home Stay Safe campaign were implemented to minimize direct contact with other people, which ushered into the “Untact” era. Meanwhile, frontline healthcare professionals that treat patients with COVID-19 are directly exposed to the virus and having a very challenging time. Healthcare workers have been known to have a very high level of stress and fatigue even before the pandemic, however, the outbreak of COVID-19 led to the huge demand exceeding the capacity of healthcare systems, and healthcare workers were put under extreme strain due to overwork and chronic stress.
Humanising our Cities
Heatherwick Studio believes that emotion is the crucial ingredient that is missing in so much of design today. When did everything become so boring and homogenous? Who is really thinking about how to make buildings, places and objects mean something to us - to lift our spirits and connect us? How can we make our cities more human? World-renowned designer Thomas Heatherwick will outline his thoughts around how designers and policy makers can create more human places, and explain how a fundamental understanding of emotion has shaped how Heatherwick Studio works across all scales and typologies. Thomas Heatherwick is one of the UK’s most prolific designers, whose varied work over two decades is characterised by its originality, inventiveness and humanity. Defying conventional classifications, Thomas founded his studio in 1994 to bring together architecture, urban planning, product design and interiors into a single creative workspace. Working across multiple scales, locations and typologies, Heatherwick Studio has developed into a team of 200 makers and inventors with no signature style. Lead by human experience rather than any fixed dogma, the studio create emotionally compelling places and objects with the smallest possible climate shadow. From their base in London, the studio team is currently working on over 30 projects in ten countries, including Azabudai Hills, a six-hectare mixed-use development in the centre of Tokyo, the new headquarters for Google in Silicon Valley and London (in collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group) and Airo, an electric car that cleans the air as it drives. The studio has also recently completed Little Island, a park and performance space on the Hudson River in New York; the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town; and Coal Drops Yard, a major new retail district in King’s Cross, London. Thomas’ forthcoming book, Humanise, will be published by Penguin in 2023
Citizen Participation is Key to Social Innovation in Future Cities
On March 31, 2022, the 1st preliminary forum of Seoul Design International Forum hosted by the Design Policy Bureau of the Seoul Metropolitan Government was held online. Out of the three speakers, Lee Kun-pyo, Dean of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, explained the core of the change towards future society and the role and vision of design under the theme, “Design in the Era of Disruptive Paradigm.” It was an inspiring lecture that led me to contemplate on a lot of things as a professor who studies and teaches design and as head of an institution of social innovation education at a university. In this paper, I aim to discuss the relevance of the meta discourse raised during the lecture on our actual lives as well as its implications for citizens of future cities.
Nature-Inspired Welcome Pavilion Debuts at Boramae Park for the Seoul International Garden Show
- The Welcome Pavilion, designed as a symbolic icon of the Seoul International Garden Show, now marks the main entrance of Boramae Park. - It functions as a central hub that integrates rest areas, exhibitions, and interactive experiences, and will later serve as a participatory public space. - Together with the “Haneul-Haneul” rest installation, it is expected to enhance the overall appeal of the Garden Show to citizens. - Starting this year, a newly designed Pavilion will be introduced annually as a signature feature of the Garden Show.[Special Interview] Prof. Dr. Peter Zec
As someone currently traveling across Asia, could you share your thoughts on what you find most inspiring about Seoul’s design compared to other cities in the region? I think Seoul has developed very strongly in the last decades and I would compare the designers from Seoul and from Korea with the designers from Italy.
