Design for All: A Visit to the Pedestrian Pathways in Olympic Park

Hello! I'm Park Yechan, a supporter of the 2023 Seoul Design International Forum..

Today, I would like to explain the meaning and importance of Seoul Design and Public Design, the 2023 Seoul Design International Forum, which will be held based on this, and my story of visiting the pedestrian path in Olympic Park in person.

Let's go inside the design that thinks of everyone, let's go together?

What is Seoul Design?

Seoul Design is a design version of Seoul that increases the competitiveness of the city and allows anyone to lead a happy life in response to the challenges faced by the community due to various global issues.

To solve various problems encountered in everyday life, we develop creative and sustainable design solutions to create a safe, convenient, and win-win urban environment.

Using public design technology, we are leading the world city through innovative technologies and designs that reflect the unique characteristics of the city, and forming a design community that is considered together by many experts, industries, and citizens.

As a student majoring in architectural engineering, I think the public design and the Seoul design policy of Seoul City around us are valuable resources that make life convenient for many citizens.

I think it's amazing that every little design that you can easily pass when you're on the road can help us when you need it the most!

As Seoul Design is designed to create a sustainable urban environment, I think it is necessary to move forward in connection with various environmentally friendly policies.

To experience this Seoul design firsthand, I headed to the walkway inside the Olympic Park.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is trying to create an environment where anyone, regardless of disability, gender, age, or nationality, can take information conveniently and safely.

It is said that they recently applied universal design that considers everyone to Olympic Park.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government introduced a pedestrian-centered information guidance system because more and more citizens are visiting the Olympic Park and existing facilities make it difficult for citizens to grasp location information within a large park.

A comprehensive guide sign located at the entrance of the Olympic Park gave me directions.

It was easy to find the destination because the description of the various zones was expressed along with the current location.

It is said that various information is guided along with pictures in an easy-to-understand manner, and convenience is increased in consideration of wheelchair accessibility.

The walking guide sign located in the middle of the road has a head-up display system that supports the time required and pedestrian-centered space recognition.

In fact, when I walked on the trail on a hot summer day, it was quite important to understand the distance to other areas and the time required for walking.

Information about convenience facilities such as toilets and drinking fountains and signs about dangerous facilities such as stairs seemed to enhance walking stability!

It is said that the vehicle separation guide was installed to secure walking stability such as crossing or steep slopes.

In fact, when I saw that the uphill path with steep slopes was a bicycle path, and the pedestrian path marked with pedestrian caution was a bicycle path, I could see that Seoul Design was responsible for safety.

In addition, there is a base guide that provides multi-sensory information such as sensor voice information guidance and night lighting, so it can be said that a win-win urban environment has been created for Seoul citizens, right?

Today, we looked at the walking paths in Olympic Park with Seoul Design and Universal Design.

I think public design and Seoul design thinking about everyone will continue to help all citizens, especially those who may have difficulties in their daily lives.

For a sustainable urban environment, elements in each field will create a sustainable Seoul, and furthermore, a sustainable Korea.

After visiting walking trails in Olympic Park, I learned how many people these universal designs positively affect. In particular, signs related to anti-slip, or separation of vehicles, allowed me to be more careful while walking. The guide signs were also valuable facilities to help many people locate and move around on hot summer days.
