Seoul has unveiled "haneulhaneul," a new fun design-based rest area, at Ttukseom Hangang Park, the venue for the 2024 Seoul International Garden Expo. "Haneulhaneul," meaning "fluttering," refers to the hammock-style resting area that utilizes the park's terrain and net material. As part of Seoul's fun design facility development project, the design for "haneulhaneul" was initiated in August, undergoing reviews by the Public Design Promotion Committee before its grand opening on September 25th.

※ Seoul's fun design aims to enhance the city's appeal and vitality by providing citizens with new discoveries, joyful interactions, and sensory delights in their daily lives.

To ensure the successful hosting of the 2024 Seoul International Garden Expo, the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Design Policy Division has undertaken a design support project through the development of fun design facilities. By creating fun design resting spaces, the goal is to foster the sustainable attraction of visitors to the Seoul International Garden Expo, a flagship project of "Garden City Seoul," and to develop it into a project that can be experienced by all citizens.

The newly developed fun design resting space, "haneulhaneul" (meaning "fluttering"), is a resting facility that utilizes a net material in harmony with nature, creating a fluttering appearance as the net roof sways in the cool breeze. By utilizing individual modules, the space can be configured in various ways and installed in suitable locations throughout the park, providing shade and a resting area regardless of the season.

The resting space comes in three versions: ▲a 5-module version, ▲a 3-module version, and ▲a customizable version. Each module provides individual resting spaces for users, and multiple modules can be combined to create a larger resting area. The upper part of the resting space is connected by a lightweight roof that provides shade and defines the space.

The module's frame is a self-supporting structure up to 4.2 meters tall. Net chairs and a net roof are installed on the frame to provide a private resting space for 3 to 5 people. The module's shape can be slightly modified to be used as a net bed for users to lie down. The basic combination modules, ▲5-module and ▲3-module combinations allow users to sit on net chairs and relax. The roof is made of a denser net material, providing shade during the day. The ▲variable module can be combined to form a net bed for users to lie down. Each module is equipped with lights for nighttime use.

"Haneulhaneul" will be temporarily installed at Ttukseom Hangang Park from September 25th to October 31st, providing a resting space for citizens visiting the garden expo and the park. A survey will be conducted among citizens during the usage period to gather feedback and improve the design. After refining the design based on the survey results, "Haneulhaneul" will be officially unveiled at the 2025 Seoul International Garden show.

A manual will be developed to provide easy-to-understand instructions on the design concept, manufacturing process, and installation methods for "Haneulhaneul" and similar fun design facilities.

Choi In-kyu, Director of Seoul's Design Policy Division said "Fun design resting spaces have been developed to bring joy and leisure to citizens' daily lives. We hope that citizens visiting Ttukseom Hangang Park until October 31st will enjoy the fun resting space made of nets. We will continue to develop and expand Seoul's fun design so that more citizens and tourists can experience it."
