Gray Construction Sites, Out! 'Attractive Fences' That Turn Seoul into an Open-Air Gallery

Hello! This is Nayoung Kwak, supporter of the 2025 Seoul Design International Forum!

Have you ever walked past a construction site in Seoul and suddenly been drawn in by a beautifully designed barricade?

The surprising star behind this transformation of dull and drab construction sites is Seoul’s very own “Attractive Fences”!

Today, let’s explore what these Attractive Fences are, how they bring positive change to urban life, and where you can find these hidden design gems across the city.

What Are 'Attractive Fences'?

'Attractive Fences' is an innovative design project by the Seoul Metropolitan Government that transforms ordinary construction barriers into engaging public art installations. Not only do they reduce the anxiety or discomfort often associated with construction zones, but they also help block noise and dust — making them a smart solution for a more pleasant urban environment. As part of Seoul’s broader initiative to enhance urban aesthetics and improve the pedestrian experience, Attractive Fences are one of many thoughtful design projects underway.

The Four Charms of Seoul’s Attractive Fences:

1. Artistic Transformation with Works by Renowned Artists

Creative works by both Korean and international artists are displayed on construction fences, turning the entire city into a massive, walkable canvas.

2. Practical Design That Reduces Noise and Dust

These fences are more than just beautiful — they’re functional too. They act as buffers against the noise and dust from construction sites, creating a safer and more pleasant environment for pedestrians.

3. Reflecting Seoul’s Identity and Policies Through Visual Storytelling

Each fence subtly incorporates elements of Seoul’s unique identity and city policies. Like a visual scavenger hunt, passersby can discover hidden messages and narratives about the city woven into the artwork.

4. Strategically Placed at Long-Term Construction Sites

They’re primarily installed at sites with long-term construction, offering extended visual comfort and enjoyment — a testament to the city’s care for its urban landscape.

Let’s Take a Closer Look at Some of Seoul’s “Attractive Fence” Locations!

Aeogae Station Fence: “SEOUL MY SOUL” Comes to Life

In front of Exit 1 of Aeogae Station stretches a 100-meter-long fence featuring illustrations by artist Sapseom. This design visually expresses Seoul’s brand slogan “SEOUL MY SOUL” by combining the letters ‘SEOUL’ and the Korean consonants ‘ㅅㅇㅁㅇㅅㅇ’ with dynamic human movements. The result is a mural-like experience that vividly conveys Seoul’s energy and passion.

Upper Yejang Park Fence: A Pink Dreamscape

Near the future site of the Namsan gondola, the Glory artist's work adds warmth and playfulness to the Yejang Park upper trail. The fence, filled with cheerful pink tones, features characters like Haechi and Friends, the Seoul Moon Hot Air Balloon, Pen Bench, Outdoor Library, and other references to Seoul’s signature policies — creating a fun, interactive experience for visitors. Glory’s artworks are known for delivering daily joy and emotional warmth.

Lower Yejang Park Fence: A Dreamy Seoul Nightscape

On the lower side of Yejang Park, along the roadside, you’ll find a whimsical design by CUNA, whose dreamy illustrations feature her signature character, “the White Witch,” on a journey around the Earth. The left side of the fence features familiar cityscapes like Namsan Tower, Myeong-dong, and Bukchon Hanok Village, while the right side presents breathtaking views of Seoul’s night — including fireworks and the Han River drone light show. It reminds us just how magical our everyday surroundings can be.

Seoul’s Attractive Fences do more than just block off construction zones — they enrich our daily lives with art, reimagine the urban aesthetic, and offer the public opportunities to enjoy culture in unexpected places. We look forward to seeing even more of these fences across Seoul in the future!
